Guided Walking Holidays, inland Malaga, Andalucia, Spain

Pico del Convento El Chorro - El Hacho de Pizarra - Carratraca Sierra Blanquilla

Bee Orchid

This walking holiday package has been designed to appeal to holiday makers who like to explore the countryside with the added advantage of a local guide, meaning that there is no stress involved and no valuable time wasted in trying to find the way. Being part of a group also means that you can share the wonderful experience with others, enjoy their companionship, joke about the effort required at times and marvel at the huge rewards on offer, some of the most breathtaking panoramas in Spain, moments of sheer magic that will stay in your memory forever.

There are three walks during a stay of one week, starting in September, each walk between 3 and 4 hours long, and although there is a certain element of difficulty in places, as the area is very mountainous, they are ideal for casual walkers of average fitness. The main objective, rather than dedicated hiking, is healthy exercise, enjoyment and relaxed contemplation of the beautiful natural surroundings of inland Andalucia.

Seven nights accommodation near Alora, either half board or bed and breakfast, is included in the package, allowing rest days in between the walks during which you can venture out on your own or enjoy the excellent facilities at your peaceful, rural hotel or guesthouse.

Pico del Convento – El Chorro (Monday)

Starting with a relaxing shady walk along an easy track with fantastic views of the embalses and then the spectacular snaking Guadalhorce River from on high, this route then winds steadily but comfortably uphill, with further breathtaking views in all directions. A slightly challenging, although short stretch follows along a rocky path to Pico del Convento for incredible clifftop views straight through the inside of the El Chorro Gorge as vultures circle overhead, taking full advantage of the ideal air currents in the area.
The return along the same route offers a different perspective to the views enjoyed on the way up.

El Hacho de Pizarra (Wednesday)

A shady gentle start along well-worn tracks beneath enormous eucalyptus trees takes you away from the streets of Pizarra onto the lower slopes of the mighty El Hacho mountain. The route winds slowly up the side of the mountain with views both ahead to the summit and behind over the steadily revealing countryside, the smell of the surrounding pine forests almost intoxicating at times. As the path takes on a sterner nature and more effort is required there are several delightful surprises in store.
The final stage of the ascent is via a very steep track and once again the views simply become more incredible every step of the way, many white pueblos visible in the valleys and hilltops all around and even Malaga and the ocean in the distance on a clear day. A picnic lunch stop at the statue of El Santo will allow you to appreciate the magnificence of the spectacle in front of you before the return journey on a winding path along the side of the mountain, eventually rejoining the path where you started.
It is quite likely that this day will not only be the highlight of your holiday, but possibly one of the best memories of your life.

Carratraca - Sierra Blanquilla (Friday)

This day's glorious outing is a fairly easy, but hugely enjoyable walk around the mountain slopes just above the pretty town of Carratraca. Within minutes of the start, the visitor will be amazed by spectacular views towards El Grajo and Sierra de los Aguas as well as being deeply impressed by the overwhelming peace and tranquillity of the area. In spring the countryside is awash with beautiful wildflowers. A small shrine and then a gorgeous viewpoint at the ruined Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Salud (Hermitage of our Lady Health) add to the splendour, before the path winds leisurely around the side of the mountain, skirting the Sierra Blanquilla and back to Carratraca.
