We heard about a greased pig-catching competition, the winner carrying off the pig, presumably with the further challenge of getting it home. There was a singing competition lasting deep into the night, there was flamenco, a football match between married men and batchelors, a motorcycle race up and down a hill, with spills of course, a live band, a disco for the youngsters and a paella of gigantic proportions. A touch of the old hooch too, although obviously in moderate proportions (!).
Owners of a holiday cottage in the tiny, very Spanish and usually blissfully peaceful village of Monterroso, Liz and her husband David, explained that visitors attended the mid-July feria from all around, the numbers swelling the pueblo to bursting point.
But all that was in the summer. Now, on a lovely February morning as we sat enjoying a cup of coffee on the secluded veranda of Liz and David’s cottage, the tranquillity was idyllic. So too was the view, with almond blossom lighting up the hillside and a deep blue sky without a smudge of cloud. A perfect time for bird watching, walking or mountain biking, Liz explaining that the area was full of lovely routes.
Tucked away just off the MA3403, between Almogia and Villaneuva de la Concepion, approachable via Junction 4 off the A357 from Malaga, Monterroso makes a most enjoyable addition to a sightseeing drive of the area, combined perhaps with a visit to El Torcal, Antequera or Lobo Park, the return along the A343 through Abdalajis and Alora completing a ‘circle’ of unforgettable and excitingly varied scenery. And for those wanting to get as far away from it all as possible, Monterroso may be an ideal holiday destination in its own right, a good central point too perhaps for further exploration of Inland Andalucia.
Don’t worry though, there may only be 14 houses and an unused mill in Monterroso, but the unnamed local bar, which is in a house and also serves as the local shop, can get very lively. And should you find it shut at any time and you need a bottle of gin or some fresh vegetables, we were told, just knock on the door, there won’t be any problem.
