asked Marina how she was feeling about her exhibition, Acuarelas de
primavera, which was about to open at El Ámbito Cultural de
Cortes Inglés in Malaga. Well, it’s all very different this time, she said. In the past I have had to arrange everything myself, right down to the catering, but this exhibition has been arranged for me by the Association of Artists of Malaga and I haven’t even seen where the paintings have been hung. I just hope it’s all OK. We all strolled from the station through the busy streets of Malaga, stopping at a pavement café for a drink, then Marina went ahead to check on the exhibition. The spare half hour dissolved into relaxation as we watched the steady flow of the traffic and then we had to run, almost arriving late, a text on Mike’s mobile asking: where are you? Marina seemed a little nervous as the President of the Association, Francisco Jurado Ternero, introduced her with deep respect and admiration. Marina gave a short speech in which she explained that her paintings spoke more than her words and in the exhibition they spoke volumes. In her brochure, Marina describes how she used only two colours for this collection of paintings. The first, yellow, she says reflects the light, is active, offensive and warm, while the second, blue, absorbs the light, is passive, defensive and cold. A mixture, green, is the synthesis of the two. It brings together the sky and the earth. In a concise, penetrating and subtle introduction to the brochure, called Return to an Ancient Culture, Señor Ternero writes: These watercolours display a very symbolical vision, making reference to ancient cultures such as the Mayo, Aztecs or Egyptians, where the sun was the ultimate reference and it is precisely the sun, the king of the stars, that is the axis of this exhibition. Going out on a limb at the buffet afterwards, I launched into a conversation in Spanish with Señor Ternero and was treated very kindly. Speaking with evident passion, he described his feelings about Marina’s paintings and art in Andalucia and in my enthusiasm I spilt my wine, although he politely guided me away to drier conditions, encouraging my faltering attempts to speak the language. Before leaving, we took another tour around the exhibition and as we said goodbye to Marina, who was still wearing the flower behind her ear that Mike had given her for luck at the start, we could see in her eyes that she was happy, her excellent paintings had scored a big hit on their opening night. |

Cultural de Cortes Inglés en Málaga. Pues, esta vez todo es diferente, dijo ella. Antes yo tuve que arreglar todo mi mismo, pero esta exhibición se ha organizado por la asociación y no he visto donde que se encuentren las pinturas. Solo espero que todo vaya bien! Andamos de la estación por las calles concurridas de Málaga y nos quedamos en un café en el pavimento para una copa, entonces Marina fue adelante para controlar la exhibición. La media hora sobrante se disvolvio y de repente estuvimos casi tarde por la inauguración, un texto en el movil de Mike preguntanto: donde estáis? Marina precía un poco nerviosa mientras el Presidente de la Asociación, Francisco Jurado Ternero, le presentó con mucho respeto y admiración. Marina dio un discurso corto en lo que explicó que sus pinturas dicen más que mis palabras y en la exhibición dijeron muchos. En su folleto Marina explicó que usó solo dos colores para la colección de estas pinturas. El primer, el amarillo, dice, refleja la luz, es activo, ofensivo, caliente, mientras el segundo, el azul, absorbe la luz, es pasivo, defensivo, frio. Una mezcla, el verde, es la síntesis de los dos. Unifica el cielo y la tierra. En una introducción conciso, penetrante y sutil en el folleto, Señor Ternero escribe: Estas acuarelas encierran una visión muy simbólica, haciendo referencia a culturas milenarias como la maya, la azteca o la egipcia, donde el sol era el referente máximo; y es precisamente el sol, el rey de los astros, el eje principal de esta exposición. Estando aislado luego, intenté tener una conversación en español con Señor Ternero y estaba tratado muy suavamente. Diciendo con pasión, él explicó sus pensamientos sobre la obra de Marina y arte en Andalucía y en mi en mi entusiasmo derramó mi tinto, aunque él me dirigió cortésmente a un lugar más seco, alentando mis intentos vacilandos a hablar el idioma. Antes de salir, miramos otra vez a las pinturas y cuando nos despedimos a Marina, quien todavís estaba llevando la flor détras de su oreja, la que Mike le habia dado para suerte, podríamos ver en sus ojos que estaba feliz, sus pinturas excelentes habian ganado mucho éxito en la inauguración. |
