Feeling
the need for a change of scenery and a breath of fresh air one delectable
spring morning, we set off for a quick drive around the block, the
block in this case being the El Torcal mountain range near Antequera.
With such a variety of landscapes and views so dramatic that the visitor
to the area may feel quite overwhelmed, it is safe to say that this
is a little drive (about 100 kms) on a staggeringly grand scale, a
relaxing but very big day out. We started from Alora, taking the A343 towards Antequera, although the drive could easily be started in Malaga or at another point on the coast, since Alora is only 45 kms inland along the mostly very good A357, adding not much more than 35 minutes to each end of the drive. At this time of year the hillsides are lush after recent rains, the roadsides are ablaze with beautiful spring flowers, such as poppies and daisies, and the towns and villages along the way are bright and cheerful with cultivated flowers, my favourite on this occasion being a wonderful electric blue flourish of wisteria. Before very long the scenery takes on a mighty, rocky aspect, with sweeping green valleys and hillsides and mountain peaks stacked up one behind the other in varying shades of hazy blue. At times every corner on the winding, narrow road, throws up ever more impressive vistas, peppered here and there with singing birds, hovering vultures and a variety of farmyard animals, including goats, donkeys and horses, and, on our particular day out, a very ponderous bull, seemingly very much at home in a roadside ruin, which, I may add, had incredible views. The route continues through the white pueblo of Valle de Abdalajis, passing vast areas of olive and almond groves, the hillsides dotted with fabulous villas, many posing the intriguing question of how anyone could ever reach them, the idea perhaps being that unless you are in the know, you simply can’t! At a point about 30 kms from Alora, take a turn to the right along the MA4402, following the clear signposts towards La Joya and Villanueva de la Concepcion. Peace and tranquillity rule, apart from perhaps the odd tinkle of a faraway goat bell. The huge, sprawling El Torcal mountain range, with its mesmerising colours and incredible shapes lies to the left and the valley, stretching away to further mountain ranges in the distance is on your right. As you wind your way uphill between the two, consider the fact that about 150 million years ago this used to be a seabed! After passing through the little pueblo of La Joya, we were held up temporarily, but most enjoyably by a rally of old cars, including a pair of Rolls Royce, several MG sports cars and a Porsche. Groups of local residents lined the roadsides to take full advantage of the unusual spectacle. A short distance further on, we stopped for coffee and panoramas at a delightful hotel, which would also be ideal for a superb lunch or a whole week of resting up in luxury. We continued on our way, eventually turning left into the MA424 and then passing through Villanueva de la Concepcion, stopping at a hillside tapas bar called Xebar with more spectacular views before then joining the A7075 towards the main visitors’ entrance to the El Torcal Parque, which you may wish to visit for a stroll through the rocky outcrops – see our separate feature with photographs. Eventually, turn left along the A343 towards Alora, passing the Lobo (Wolf) Park, which you may also want to visit, and then passing the turnoff towards La Joya, where your ‘drive around the block’ began. Continue all the way back to Alora, enjoying the same scenery from the early part of your journey, but appreciating it in a different light and from the other direction. |

| Sintiendo
la necesidad de un cambio del paisaje y de una respiración
del aire fresco una mañana deliciosa de la primavera, damos
un paseo rápido alrededor del bloque, el bloque en este caso
que era la gama de la montaña del El Torcal cerca de Antequera.
Con tal variedad de paisajes y de visiónes tan dramáticos
que el visitante al área puede sentirse abrumado absolutamente,
es seguro decir que esto es un paseo pequeño (cerca de 100
kms) en una escala muy magnífica. Salimos de Alora, tomando el A343 hacia Antequera, aunque el paseo se podría comenzar fácilmente en Málaga o en otro punto en la costa, puesto que Alora es solamente 45 kms interiores a lo largo del, agregando no mucho más que 35 minutos a cada extremo del paseo. En esta temporada del año las laderas son verdes después de lluvias recientes, los bordes de la carretera son ardiendos con las flores hermosas de la primavera, tales como amapolas y margaritas, y las ciudades y las aldeas a lo largo de la carretera son brillantes con las flores cultivadas, mi favorito en esta ocasión que es un azul eléctrico maravilloso de wisteria. Muy pronto el paisaje adquiera un aspecto poderoso, rocoso, con los valles verdes y las laderas y los picos de la montaña apilaron uno detrás del otro en cortinas que variaban del azul nebuloso. Ocasionalmente cada esquina en el camino estrecho ofrece vistas impresionantes, incluido aquí y allí los pájaros que cantan, los buitres que flotan y una variedad de los animales del corral, incluyendo cabras, burros y caballos, y, en nuestro día particular, un toro muy pesado, aparentemente mucho en casa en una ruina del borde de la carretera, que, yo debo agregar, tenía vistas increíbles. ¡La ruta continúa a través del pueblo blanco de Valle de Abdalajis, pasando áreas extensas las arboledas de aceituna y de almendra, las laderas punteadas con casa fabulosas, muchas que plantean la cuestión intrigante de cómo cualquier persona podría alcanzarlas siempre, la idea quizás que es que a menos que estés en el saber, no puedes simplemente! Más o menos 30 kms de Alora, da una vuelta a la derecha a lo largo del MA4402, siguiendo los postes indicadores claros hacia la Joya y Villanueva de la Concepción. La paz y la tranquilidad gobiernan, aparte de quizás el retintín ocasional de una cabra. La gama enorme de la montaña del El Torcal, con sus colores fuertes y formas increíbles está a la izquierda y el valle, estirando lejos a gamas más de las montañas en la distancia está a la derecha. ¡Mientras vas cuesta arriba entre los dos, considera el hecho que hace cerca de 150 millones de años estaba un fondo del mar! Después de pasar a través del pequeño pueblo del La Joya, en donde nos retrasamos temporalmente, pero alegremente por una reunión de viejos coches, incluyendo un par de Rolls Royce, de varios MGs y de un Porsche. Grupos de residentes locales estaban los bordes de la carretera para disfrutar completamente del espectáculo inusual. Una distancia corta más lejos, paramos para tomar el café y disfrutar las vistas en un hotel, que también sería ideal para un almuerzo magnífico o una semana entera de las relajación en lujo. Continuamos, dando vuelta eventual a la izquierda en el MA424 y después pasando a través de Villanueva de la Concepción, parando en un bar de las tapas con vistas espectaculares antes entonces de seguir el A7075 hacia la entrada de los visitantes principales a El Torcal Parque, que quizas puedas desear visitar para dar un paseo - ve nuestro reportaje. Por fin, da vuelta a la izquierda a lo largo del A343 hacia Alora, pasando Lobo Parque, que puedas también desear a visitar, y después pasando la salida hacia La Joya, donde su paseo alrededor del bloque comenzó. Continua a Alora, gozando del mismo paisaje de la parte anterior de su viaje, pero apreciándolo en una diversa luz y de la otra dirección. |
