| It
is a different breed from me that goes rock climbing. While I love
to look at the many stunning rock faces in inland Andalucia, the
thought of getting stuck halfway up one of them fills me with uneasiness.
“If I told you I was terrified of falling down,” I said
to a master of that other breed, Tobias Gortz, at his splendid home
near El Chorro, “what would you say to me?”
“You have nothing to worry about,” Tobias replied, relaxed
and very confident, “you are in safe hands. There would be
ropes to prevent you from falling, you would be OK.”
Tobias, together with his wife Grit, who are both from Germany,
runs the excellent rock climbing adventure company Climbing-Lodge.com,
which also offers accommodation for like-minded rock climbing enthusiasts
from around the world, catering for all levels, from absolute beginners
to absolute experts.
“I started climbing in a gym in Hamburg,” said Tobias,
“which is where many people learn the basics before actually
tackling the real thing. There are rock faces near here of all degrees
of difficulty, from very easy ones in Abdalajis, where we usually
take the beginners, to the most challenging ones in El Chorro.”
Tobias admitted that he personally takes on any rock face that he
fancies, although his guests are usually only taken to specially
chosen rock faces, where a local association of rock climbers has
carefully prepared the climbing area, with support rods bolted into
the rock, making safety a top priority. A wonderful website, designed
by Grit and which is soon to be translated into English, is full
of incredible photographs, some of which are shown in the feature.
Tobias simply smiled and nodded, in his quiet, unassuming way, when
I enthused about the photos, noting that there was only one way
to take them, by being way up there yourself.

una raza muy diferente de mi que disfruta la escalada. Mientras

interior de Andalucia, el pensamiento de estando atascado a la mitad
de una de ellos me llena con inquietud.
“Si te dijera que yo estaba aterrorizado de cayendo, que me
dirías?” dije a un maestro de esa raza diferente, en
su casa estupenda acerca de El Chorro.
“No tienes ningun miedo,” contestó Tobias, tranquilo
y muy seguro de sí mismo, “estás en manos fuera
de peligro. Serían cuerdas a impedirte de caer, estarías
seguro.”
Tobias, junto con su mujer Grit, quienes los dos vienen de Alemania,
dirigen el excelente Climbing-Lodge.com, una casa ruaral con vistas
maravillosas sobre las montañas, ofreciendo alojamiento para
la gente de la misma opinión el todo el mundo, atendiendo
para principiantes a expertos.
“Empecé la escalada en un gimnasio en Hamburg,”
