Ruins of Bobastro Iglesia Mozárabe with stunning mountain

| Sitting
on a rock in the sun next to the fascinating remains of the Iglesia
Mozárabe in the Bobastro Valley near El Chorro, I wondered
what sympathy anyone could possibly have for a lawless bandit like
the famous rebel Omar Ibn Hafsun, who may well have sat on the same
rock over a thousand years ago as he contemplated his next move during
his rule of most of Andalucía. Yet I did feel a measure of sympathy, as I gazed out at the stupendous panorama in front of me. Probably the same sort of sympathy as nearly 3000 others who joined up with him because they were fed up with paying unfair taxes. Much changes over the years and much doesn’t! I choose to pay my taxes, even the ones that are blatantly unfair. But I don’t like it! Anger or resistance though were the last things on my mind as I soaked up the natural beauty, the tranquillity and the majesty of history, or history of majesty, perhaps. Easy to find, impossible to forget, a visit to Bobastro makes the perfect pinnacle, in a very geographical sense too, of a wonderful day’s excursion. From Alora, or just as easily from Malaga, take the excellent A357 as far as Ardales, turning right at a signpost to Los Embalses and Bobastro. Turn left at a T-junction soon afterwards. Follow the road and then eventually turn right at a signpost to Bobastro and El Chorro. The scenery just gets better and better around every tight corner, great fun for the passengers and a great challenge for the driver! Another signpost then points up a steep mountain road to the right – you can go all the way to the top for incredible views over El Chorro and the Guadalhorce Valley, although the route to the Iglesia is via a series of rough steps cut into the rock about three-quarters of the way up. It has to be said that although the walk to the Iglesia is relatively short, parts of the route are rather steep. Well worth the trouble though, if you are able, and an ideal place for a picnic. Back down at the bottom of this mountain road, turn right and prepare for breathtaking views of El Chorro and perhaps a mouthwatering lunch at the lovely La Garganta. The route back to Alora through Bermejo offers more wonderful views, the countryside changing dramatically along the way. Stay in the area for a while if you want to – there is a very good selection of holiday accommodation to choose from and the bars and restaurants are usually very good value and offer a warm welcome. Be careful, though. You might end up wanting to live permanently around these parts. We did! |

en una roca en el sol al lado del restos del Iglesia Mozárabe
en el Valle de Bobastro cerca de El Chorro, me preguntaba qué
condolencia cualquier persona podría posiblemente tener para
un bandido sin ley como el rebelde famoso Omar Ibn Hafsun, que se
hubiera sentado en la misma roca más que un mil años
mientras que él comtemplaba su movimiento siguiente durante
su regla de la mayoría de Andalucía. Pero sentía una medida de condolencia, pues miraba en el panorama estupendo delante de mí. Probablemente la misma clase de condolencia que casi 3000 otras que ensamblaron con él porque estuvieron hartas con pagar impuestos injustos. ¡Mucho cambia sobre los años y mucho no! Elijo pagar mis impuestos, incluso los que son evidentemente injustos. ¡Pero no tengo gusto de éllos! La cólera o la resistencia era sin embargo las cosas pasadas en mi mente como disfruté la belleza natural, la tranquilidad y la majestad de la historia, o la historia de la majestad, quizás. Fácil encontrar, imposible olvidarse, una visita a Bobastro hace el pináculo perfecto, en un sentido muy geográfico también, de la excursión de un día maravilloso. De Málaga o Álora toma el A357 excelente hasta Ardales, dando vuelta a la derecha en un poste indicador a Los Embalses y a Bobastro. Da vuelta a la izquierda pronto luego. Siga el camino y después da vuelta eventual a la derecha en un poste indicador a Bobastro y a El Chorro. ¡El paisaje parece mejor y mejor alrededor de cada esquina apretada, gran diversión para los pasajeros y de un gran desafío para el conductor! Otro poste indicador entonces señala un camino escarpado a la derecha - puedes ir a la tapa para las vistas increíbles sobre el El Chorro y el Valle de Guadalhorce, aunque la ruta al Iglesia está por una serie de pasos ásperos cortados en la roca cerca de tres cuartos de la distancía para arriba. Tiene que ser dicho que aunque la caminata a la Iglesia es relativamente corta, las piezas de la ruta son algo escarpadas. Vale la pena, sin embargo, si lo puedes, y un lugar ideal para un picnic. De nuevo al fondo de este camino de la montaña, da vuelta a la derecha y prepárate para las vistas impresionantes de El Chorro y quizás un almuerzo delicioso en el La Garganta. La ruta de nuevo a Alora por Bermejo ofrece visiónes más maravillosas, el campo que cambia dramáticamente a lo largo de la ruta. Quédate en el área por un rato si lo deseas - hay una selección muy buena del alojamiento a elegir de y los bares y los restaurantes son generalmente valor muy bueno y ofrecen una recepción simpática. Ten cuidado, aunque. Puedes ser que quisieras vivir permanentemente por aqui. ¡Nosotros lo hemos hecho! |
